Question: From Chris. (Subject: Potassium...)q1

I've seen many references that say potassium is important. Is there a reason that Total Balance only has minimal amounts of potassium? I've heard that taking potassium would help prevent the leg/foot cramps that I occasionally get. Is this correct?

Answer: From Nicolien.

Potassium is indeed important, and it is present in all vegetables, apricots, avocados, banana, citrus fruits, dates, herring, milk, nuts (almonds, cashews, pecan's), potato, raisins, sardines, and sunflower seeds. As it is present in common foods we have not found it necessary to have very much of it in Total Balance and its presence is mainly to facilitate the uptake of other more important ingredients in TB that are not readily available in foods.

In addition there is more Potassium in the Total Balance formula than the amount specifically stated. This is because there is also Potassium contained within the herbal extracts as well.

Factors that increase demand of potassium are: adrenal stress, adrenal tumors, athletes, burns, cortisone therapy, diabetes, diabetic acidosis, sports drinks, diarrhea, diuretics, excess salt intake, coffee, tea, alcohol and sugar, hypertension, laxative abuse, liver disease, malnutrition, renal disease.

Question: From Brian. (Subject: Insomnia...)q2

My wife suffers from insomnia, is there anything natural that you can recommend?

Answer: From Nicolien.

I am able to give you some ideas that may help your wife to sleep better:

  • It is best not to have coffee, chocolate, strong tea or other stimulants such as soft drinks with caffeine, later than mid-afternoon.
  • Drinking alcohol at night can impair sleep in some people.
  • Relaxing gentle stretches or yoga before bedtime may help.
  • Vigorous exercise which gets the heart rate up should not be performed after early evening, leaving a gap of a few hours before bedtime.
  • Eating fruit or drinking some fruit juice, or eating dates, figs, or yoghurt before bedtime may promote sleep (as they contain tryptophan, which raises serotonin levels and promotes sleep). It is best however not to eat heavy meals close to bedtime.
  • Some helpful herbs are: valerian (Valeriana officinalis), hops (Humulus lupulus) or/and passionflower (Passiflora incarnata). They can be taken as herbal tea or in capsule form.

Question: From Lewis. (Subject: Chetation with EDTA...)q3

What are your thoughts on chelation with EDTA, my specialist said it would be allright if I had the right product, my reason for taking it is to clean out my blocked artery.

Answer: From Nicolien.

EDTA oral chelation is not as effective as claimed. EDTA chelation has merit but only when administered via intravenous means, but that method is inconvenient and requires a skilled physician to administer it. It is of minimal value when taken orally because the EDTA cannot get effectively get into the blood stream in sufficient quantities. We investigated this because we were interested in the possibility of producing an oral chelation supplement using EDTA.

The other options are specialty suppositories and possible high dose Vitamin C enemas. However, there are risks with both these methods and must only be done under the supervision of a qualified physician. These methods require bypassing the digestive system. Warren Matthews is currently working with Dr Munem in developing a product to effectively clean arteries and slow down the hardening of them. The work on this is well advanced.
