Question: From Sheryl. (Subject: Triglycerides in a 4 year old...)q1
Do you know why a 4 year old would have high triglycerides?
Answer: From Nicolien.
There are a number of possible causes. High triglycerides in a 4 year old child are not normal, and it is unlikely to be the result of lifestyle, as is often the case in adults. Possible causes may be:
Diet high in carbohydrates and fats, with not enough fiber (vegetables, fruits, legumes, wholegrains etc.)
A genetic inability to metabolize fat (it may be possible to find xanthomas on the child's skin: very small elevated fat deposits, around eyes, elbows and knees etc)
Liver disease
Inability to produce bile
Diabetes
Hypothyroidism
Kidney disease, etc
I would suggest that you consult a doctor so they can begin a series of tests to try and determine the cause.

Question: From Li-Ling. (Subject: Calcium in young boys...)q2
I am trying to provide sufficient calcium for my 3 boys (aged 8-12 )I read from one of Warren's 15 sec news that milk might not be good as it is too processed.
Can you recommend calcium rich foods or products which are not as controversial as milk?
Answer: From Nicolien.
That's true about milk, particularly the homogenized version. Calcium containing foods are: beef, oranges, almonds, buckwheat, egg yolk, green leafy vegetables, bok choy, molasses, sardines, broccoli, and turnips.
Your children can also take our Calcium with Phytonutrients, which is safe for children. For details of this product please click here.

Question: From Kim. (Subject: ADHD.)q3
My 10 year old son has ADHD, can you recommend any specific nutrients for him?
Answer: From Nicolien.
I would suggest that your son takes 2 capsules of omega 3/DHA fish oil daily, as this may be helpful in ADD. For more information about this please click here.
Other nutrients that may be helpful for ADD/ADHD are: vitamin B6, iron, magnesium, zinc, Gammalinolenic Acid (GLA) (an omega 6 essential fatty acid present in hemp seed oil, evening primrose oil, borage oil and blackcurrant oil), phosphatidylcholine, phosphatidylserine, bioflavonoids (especially the ones present in blue/purple berries) and oligosaccharides.
Our Total Balance would also be helpful for him but he is still too young to take that. (Minimum 12 years of age). However, we will soon be releasing a special version of our Neurological Formula which specifically addresses learning and memory and is suitable for children as young as 10 years. This will be perfect for him. Keep an eye on our newsletters as we will be announcing it as soon as it is available after completing the first run.
