Question: From Cathy. (Subject: Omega 3 and heart health...)q2
I purchased from vitamin world super omega-3 natural fish oil 1000 mg. Reading the warning label it tells me not to take if it if you have heart disease (I had a stent put in Jan.04) and also said not to take if you are on aspirin. I do take an aspirin at night 81gm.
The medicines that I do take are Zocor 20mg, Diovan and Toprol 25mg. I would like to take fish oil but wondering if a smaller omega would do. I am 70 years of age and would appreciate if you could help.
Answer: From Nicolien.
I am not familiar with the Omega 3 fish oil from Vitamin world, but I can answer your questions regarding our Omega 3/DHA fish oil.
There are no known adverse interactions between our Omega 3/DHA fish oil and your prescription medications. Regarding aspirin, if you take no more than 2 capsules of our fish oil daily, this should be fine whilst you are also taking a small dose of aspirin.
Remember that fish oil has similar beneficial effects to aspirin and more health benefits, and no side effects if taken in an appropriate dose. So, it could be that you could reduce your daily aspirin intake. This might be worth discussing with your physician.
Regarding the claim that fish oil would be contra-indicated with heart disease, this is nonsense. A good quality fish oil such as ours may on the contrary be expected to benefit people with heart disease. For more info please click here.

Question: From Andrew. (Subject: Enteric coating...)q3
I am wondering why not all the Xtend-Life products possess an enteric coating? Do some products require it, whereas others do not?
Which products, if I may ask, have an enteric coating, and why in their case do they require it? Which products do not have an enteric coating, and why in their case, do they not require it?
Answer: From Warren.
Our Total Balance, Arthrit-Eze and Neurological formulas are all enteric coated. This is because a number of the ingredients that they contain are sensitive to stomach acids and certain enzymes. As an example, we use SAMe in both the Neurological and Arthrit-Eze formulas. This is a very effective and expensive ingredient but is one that is instantly destroyed if exposed to stomach acids. This is why it is not a common ingredient.
There are many other ingredients as well in these formulas that are either partially or totally destroyed by stomach acid. When Prof. Dr. A. Munem Doaud develops our formulas, he carefully assesses the various delivery systems and where the active ingredients should be released for maximum efficacy... in the stomach or the upper intestine.
It is possible to determine this scientifically and assess where the contents of each specific formula is released. Sometimes, after taking into account both the ingredients and the objective of the product it may be decided that it should not be in enteric coated form, or we may use a different delivery system.
For example, we use a combination of oils in the cholesterol formula to protect the active ingredients and get them to the part of the body that they need to get to. Likewise, the Natural Energy formula is designed to be released in the stomach as we want the action of the stomach acids and some of the enzymes of the active ingredients present.
So, in summary Andrew, there is no simple rule which determines the delivery mechanism of any product. It is a combination of many individual factors. If you would like to know more about the enteric coating system please click here.
