Question: From John. (Subject: CODEX...)q1
Do you know what the true current situation is regarding CODEX and the likely risks that it may pose to my future supply of supplements in the USA?
Answer: From Warren.
There is an incredible amount of confusion amongst customers and the industry alike, about the implications that the new CODEX rules may have for residents of the USA. This confusion is added to by the EU Food Directive on Supplements which is something quite different but has indirect implications.
However, the EU Food Directive on Supplements as I mentioned in an earlier newsletter is stalled for the moment and may be overturned, so let's put that aside for the moment. In many respects that Directive was posing a greater threat than CODEX as they were seeking to restrict the use of about 80% of natural ingredients that have been used in some cases for hundreds if not thousands of years.
On the other hand the focus of CODEX seems to be to restrict the levels of certain vitamins and minerals available in supplements by proposing that should the levels exceed the RDA that they be treated as a drug and therefore available only by prescription. This is bad news for those people who believe that high doses of vitamins and minerals are good for you.
From our point of view this aspect of CODEX will have minimal effect because we largely agree with the authorities that high doses of certain vitamins and minerals can lead to long term negative health implications as they accumulate in the cells and will eventually mutate. But... that's a subject for another day.
However, of more concern, is the likely impact of taking other safe nutrients as herbs and placing restrictions on these.
Will the new CODEX rules impact on USA consumers? This is a question which is being hotly debated at the moment and in which I will not participate as it would be a full time job trying to sift out fact from fiction. What I can say is that there is a strong world-wide trend for harmonization so I certainly would not dismiss those people who argue that it will impact on US consumers.
If you are interested in this subject I would suggest that you read two articles.
One is from snopes.com who publish 'urban legends'. You can read their article at:
http://www.snopes.com/politics/medical/vitamins.asp
The other is a rebuttal of this by the IAHF and can be read at:

There is a lot of good information in the rebuttal.

Question: From Gary. (Subject: Life Pak...)q2
NOTE FROM WARREN: We have included this correspondence to help better inform those subscribers who often ask us about Life Pak.
18th March 2005 (From Gary)
Pls cancel my order. I do love your product but I am going to try the Life Pak from Pharmanex as they have a scanning machine, that is non-invasive, and I can see if the supplements are actually changing my antioxidant levels. I am working with some guys over here in the UK who have some big plans and want to change peoples lives in regards to health and nutrition.
Warren replies:
I just thought that I would drop you a note personally re your decision to switch to Life Pak. This product has been around for quite a while and although it is a good product for a mass produced one it is a very basic one.
Their 'scanner' has also been around for a number of years and has been pushed hard but is more a sales gimmick than a really good method of measuring the effectiveness of a supplement.
The product is sold via MLM and is very expensive for what it is. We have had dozens, maybe hundreds of people shift from Life-Pak to Xtend-Life and this is the first that I know of to switch the other way.
Good luck with it. Please keep in touch and let me know how you get on.
PS. I have attached an old spreadsheet comparison which you may find helpful. Since then we have made some further improvements to the TB formula which will be released as a fourth generation in about 3 months.
27th April 2005 (From Gary)
I have used the Life Pak for one month. I did find that although I had the tablets with food my urine was very yellow. If I recall correctly, when I was taking Total Balance, this was not the case. I also have felt a massive difference in my memory. Total Balance helped my memory significantly - what is in the product that helps brain function? My memory has been noticeably poor since I have stopped taking Total Balance.
Your help would be much appreciated.
Warren replies:
There could be quite a number of reasons why your urine is very yellow. Although it did not happen when you were taking Total Balance it can, and does with some people. I find it happens with me from time to time but generally only for a day or so. It's possible that you may not be getting the same level of bio-availability with Life Pak that you were getting with Total Balance because it does not have the same sophisticated delivery system which TB has, or your body does not need as much of one of the nutrients that you are giving it.
It may also be due to the 'form' of nutrients that they are using. Irrespective of the cause it is nothing to be concerned about so I wouldn't worry about it at all.
Of more concern is the effect you are finding with regard to your memory. I have to say though that this is not at all surprising. You are now missing all the essential amino acids and other specialty supplements including various extracts that contribute to brain health. There is no specific substance that I can point to because there are a number of them. We design the product so that all nutrients complement each other to enhance the efficacy of the whole product. If you have another look at the comparison spreadsheet that I sent you some while ago you will get a better idea.
The object of Total Balance is to target all the organs of which the brain is one. Just a quick note... we have completed development of a new product which specifically targets memory. We will be releasing this product at the latter part of next month.
As a side note, if you have your testosterone measured you would probably find that this has decreased as well because you are not now getting nutrients such as Chrysin that prevents Testosterone from being converted to Estrogen.
Maybe it might be time for you to come back to us Gary? If not, and you stay on Life Pak it may be a good idea to add the new memory formula when we release it. Plus add another supplement that will help prevent long term problems with your prostate (these are incorporated into TB Men's Plus).
I hope that this helps answer your questions. Good luck.

Question: From Margaret. (Subject: Blood clots and flying...)q3
My husband and I are going on holiday to England on 2nd May!! I am wondering whether the Omega 3 is enough to stop blood clots while flying? I am keeping well and the headaches have not been such a problem since I started taking the Neurological formula at a different time to everything else. Have you any suggestions re travelling with our products.
Are there any problems with Singapore England or Hong Kong immigrations? Hubby is still taking his Cartia and is keeping really well with no heart problems at all which I put down to the Xtend life regime we are both on. He is taking no drugs other than the low dose aspirin.
He has been working hard physical work this summer with no problems.
Answer: From Nicolien.
Nice to hear from you again! Regarding your question about fish oil... fish oil does indeed have similar effects to aspirin in helping reduce the risk of blood clots, but of course it has many more health benefits, and no side effects.
In so far as taking supplements overseas, Hong Kong, Singapore and the UK are no problem. Warren travels to all these places regularly and has never had problems. Most countries let you take a 3 month personal supply of supplements. As long as you keep it in the original bottle, it should not be a problem.
