Question: From Beth. (Subject: Links between certain nutrients and weight gain...)I was wondering if there is any link between theanine, tyrosine and Sam-E (as they all affect neurotransmitters) and weight gain. I used to take an anti-depressant and gained weight from it (Paxil and then Lexapro). When I was able to deal with my life issues without the use of anti-depressants, I got off of them slowly.
However, I started taking the above amino acids for stress relief (theanine), to enhance metabolism and provide stress relief (tyrosine) and to provide joint relief (Sam-E)- I work out and run (about 1 - 2 miles every other day) and suffer from hip and joint pain - age is 39 - do Pilates as well.
I also take glucosamine+MSM, a multi vitamin, Calcium, Vitamin C, Vitamin E, Omega - all, food enzymes, Athro-Pain Relief, Chromium Picolinate, L-lysine (most of these are from Country Life) Bromelain, Alpha Lipoic Acid and Acetyl L Carnitine, N-Acetyl Cysteine, L-Carnitine and Glutamine, Jarrow Formulas IP6 Inosital Hexaphosphate for heavy metal detoxification, and then dandelion root and milk thistle herbal liquids 2x a day to help with my insulin resistance.
I drink a mixture of whey protein - half a tablespoon + a tablespoon of Dr. Schultz's SuperFood (green supplement) in 8 oz of water in the morning for breakfast.
I work out in my lunch hour every day - 10 minutes of cardio + weights for half hour 3 x week, and 45 minutes of Pilates 2 times a week, then run in morning or at night for 20 minutes about every other day.
However, my downfall is sugar. After I eat my lunch - a half hour after working out, usually a salad with tuna mixed in, I go for a cookie or two. Then, for dinner, I have pizza twice a week, grilled chicken with salad twice a week, and try to stay away from carbs/bread besides the pizza and then the chocolate I eat after dinner - a brownie or two or candy bar or two.
I was told I was insulin resistant and definitely have a roll around my stomach (!)
Any suggestions as to diet + supplementation and to my question about weight gain from the neurotransmitter supplements?
Please note that I plan on buying your cholesterol lowering formula within the month for my husband, and may switch to your women's formula for myself.
Thank you all so much for your information emails and generous advice-giving! What a kind service.
Answer: From Nicolien.
Thanks for your email and your compliment.
Certain anti-depressive medications can indeed cause weight gain. With regard to the other nutrients that you mentioned... L-Theanine, L-Tyrosine and SAMe I have checked out a reliable database as well as other literature about these nutrients, and there is no mention of the possibility of weight gain with these nutrients.
It is much more likely that your weight gain is caused by your diet. When a person is insulin resistant like you are, glucose metabolism is impaired, and the use of glucose by the body and muscle cells is impaired. Excess glucose which cannot be metabolized is converted into fat.
Continued use of sugar and refined carbohydrates and foods that score high in the glycemic index (GI) may lead to development of diabetes type II and cardiovascular disease. I will attach the glycemic index to this email. Ideally, it is best to only eat foods that score 'low' in the GI. It is very likely that if you stick to these foods, that you will lose weight.
After a period of not eating sugar or refined carbs, the craving for these foods does diminish considerably.
Regarding weight loss and insulin resistance, it is VERY important to stop eating sugar and refined carbohydrates such as white flour, pizza, cookies, cakes, white bread, pasta etc and processed foods. Eat plenty of protein-foods such as lean meat, fish, poultry, tofu, eggs, etc, and eat fibre rich foods such as oats, bran, psyllium and fresh garlic. Avoid transfats and hydrogenated oils (deep fried foods, chips, cookies, margarine and fast food).

I also think that you are taking too many supplements. It is very difficult to get the right proportions when taking so many and they are all released at different times if used with different excipients. I would strongly suggest that you use our Total Balance as this will eliminate the need for many of the supplements you are currently taking.
Combine this with our Arthrit-Eze and our Omega 3 and you can eliminate the supplements that you are taking for joint problems. If you decide not to add the Arthrit-Eze be sure to check that your SAMe supplement is enteric coated. If it is not then it will not be doing its job, as the active ingredient is destroyed by stomach acid.
