Comment: From Carlos. (Subject: Vitamin D and sunlight...)q1
I am currently working nights for the next three years... exposure to the sun is very limited. Should I be taking a vitamin "D" supplement? I am taking your Omega 3 and Total Balance Men's Plus at this time.
Response: From Nicolien.
Total Balance contains 300 IU per daily dose of 6 tablets. Foods that contain vitamin D are: fish liver oils (our Omega 3 is made from the body, not the liver of the fish), egg yolk, milk and sprouted seeds. If you drink milk and/or eat eggs very regularly, you would not need to take additional vitamin D.
Still... try to get a bit of sun when you can as it conveys benefits other than just helping production of Vitamin D.

Comment: From Ann. (Subject: Blueberries and the Brain...)q2
I've been reading some things about the anti-oxidant properties of Blueberries. Therefore I am interested in getting your expert advice about Blueberries and Neuro Natural products.
My brother, who has some brain cell loss, is taking 1 Omega 3 per day, 6 Men's Total Balance per day, and 6 Neuro Natural for Memory per day. I noticed that you have 50 mg of Blueberry Extract in your Neuro Natural Sleep formula.
I am wondering if he should be taking some of the Sleep formula for the Blueberry Extract, so that he could use the extra anti-oxidants which might help his brain functioning? I probably should compare mg for mg. of all 4 formulas, to see which would help him the most. Maybe you could advise me, as I'm not sure what formula is best for him.
He has been taking these supplements for about a year, and he has a type of dementia, caused by many factors; including alcohol (which he has been completely off for almost 3 years,) malnutrition during that time, he has SADS, and probably never had a diet in Omega 3 foods, or the proper nutrition...
He has improved his diet and Supplementation 100% during the past few years. He has come a very long way, both mentally and physically, but we're trying to improve his short term memory loss and cognitive functioning even more. After reading about how Blueberries are one of the best anti-oxidants, we have questions about how helpful these would be in your Neuro Natural formula
Response: From Nicolien.
Blueberry is certainly good for Alzheimer's, but so are the other ingredients in the synergy of Neuro-Natural Memory. Bilberry is also from the blueberry family and has similar properties. It is not just about the amount of blueberry and bilberry in the formulas, but also Dr. Munem has weighed up the relative amounts and the synergy of all ingredients of the different NN formulas.
Total Balance also contains 50 mg of bilberry extract. I would recommend your brother stays with the current combination of the same products he is taking, but takes 2 - 4 Omega 3 capsules a day. One capsule is not very much at all for an adult. The Omega 3 is best taken with or just after food.

Question: From Ann. (Subject: What about extra Gingko and Vinpocetine? (continuation of above question))I have a few other questions... would taking some extra Gingko and extra Vinpocetine help the Neuro-Natural Memory, or would it throw off the synergy of the formula?
Would taking the additional Omega 3, be a lot more helpful in getting those damaged brain cells in the hippocampus to work better? If so, why?
Also, the problem seems to be, that taking more than one Omega 3 a day, seems to cause him intestinal problems, so what can be done about this? Also, is the side effect, something that would eventually subside?
Answer: From Nicolien.
I would not recommend increasing his intake of Gingko and Vinpocetine. The amount that is in Total Balance and Neuro-Natural Memory combined is sufficient. This is an excellent combination and ensures your brother of good therapeutic levels of the relevant ingredients, and added to this the synergy of the products are such that he won't need more of these two substances.
With the fish oil however, taking 1 capsule a day for an adult is not a relevant therapeutic dose. Certainly if there is a brain problem, it needs to be more in the range of 3 - 4 capsules a day. The DHA (present in our Omega 3/DHA) is an important building block of brain cell membranes.
Taking the softgels at the same time as food is an option, or if that does not solve the problem, taking it along with food AND digestive enzymes may well be the answer. The digestive problems he is experiencing are most likely caused by not having enough hydrochloric acid in the stomach, which can be solved by taking digestive enzymes. It does not go away by itself and is not a side effect as such, so I would suggest that if the problem persists that you get some digestive enzymes for him to try taking with the Omega 3.
