Something a little different this week:

Instead of the usual three news items we are going to give you a few short facts to ponder over...

Health trends in the US...

The International Anti-Aging conference in Singapore last year discussed some statistics prepared by the Federal Interagency Forum on Aging-Related Statistics entitled "Older Americans 2000: Key indicators of Well Being". They found that between 1984 and 1996 the prevalence of:

  • Stroke increased one percent.
  • Diabetes increased two percent.
  • Arthritis increased three percent.
  • Heart disease increased five percent.
  • Cancer increased seven percent.

From 1960 to 1994 the number of people aged 85+ increased 274%. This raises some further interesting facts...

  • At 1994 those aged 85+ totaled 3 million or one percent of the US population.
  • By 2050 the US is expected to be home for 19 million people aged 85+, which equates to 5% of the population.
  • Elderly support burden in 2025 will be 50 percent larger than in 1998.

In 1996, 27 percent of older persons assessed their health as fair or poor with one third having significant limitations on activity due to chronic conditions.

At around the same time a poll conducted by AARP and reported in the Times said that 57 percent of adult Americans predict having a life expectancy of 120 years!

Warren Matthews comments: I agree that the prediction of 120 years is possible but sadly only a few will make it become a reality. Even more important than the length of your life is the quality of it! You must enjoy vitality and be pain free up until the last few weeks of your life, otherwise it is pointless. If you are serious about longevity you MUST make the effort to keep your body in reasonable health and avoid the diseases that plague so many people. This means making some effort in preventing disease by ensuring that your lifestyle includes quality food, adequate exercise, sleep and essential nutrients that your diet cannot supply via quality supplements.
